                                  WHAT ARE EGIDs??
(Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases)

EGID is a shortened term or abbreviation for Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases. This term groups together several different diseases. A diagnosis of an EGID is made through a biopsy when having a scope such as an endoscopy or colonoscopy. When the biopsy shows that eosinophils are present in one or more areas of the GI tract you then have a confirmed diagnosis.
So what is an eosinophil? Eosinophils are white blood cells that are a part of our immune system. In general, eosinophils are good for us as they help to fight off illnesses in our bodies. However, when they infiltrate into our digestive tract it becomes an uncureable disease.
So, what causes these eosinophils to migrate to our GI tracts? Well, it seems one answer to that is... food. When we ingest certain foods our bodies think that it is a parasite and the eosinophils go into attack mode. This causes them to go into overdrive thus causing inflammation and damage to the GI tract. However, it is not just as simple as getting allergy testing done and then avoiding those foods. It is much more complex than that. Most food allergy testing is inaccurate for us. Also, the eosinophils can go into overdrive from environmental allergies. Sometimes no allergens are found.

Here are the terms for each EGID:
EoE: Eosinophilic Esophagitis - in the esophagus
EG: Eosinophilic Gastritis - in the stomach
EGE: Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis - in the stomach and small intestine
EC: Eosinophilic Colitis - in the large intestine or colon
HES: Hypereosinophilic Syndrome- in the blood
CSS: Churg Strauss Syndrome

**In this website we will not be covering HES or CSS
.**
These two are very rare and complicated diseases. We do not have the personal
resources that we would like to be able to cover these diseases in the depth we would like. Chrug Strauss has many different stages as well as many different illnesses clumped into one. The affects vary greatly from one person to the next. We hope to add this information in the near future.
